NewsSeptember Price RiseSadly, we have to forewarn people that in September our prices will have to go up. We have managed to keep the prices the same for the last 3 years, which we think you'll agree is something to be proud of. However, we will have to increase the prices on the 1 day Off Road Experience, the 2 day Off Road Academy weekend, and the Junior training. We hope you'll still consider us Good Value for Money.
Wheeldon Farm in association with Suzuki GBWe are proud to announce our association with Suzuki GB. We are confident you will be impressed with our re-branded Arena, and the range of Suzuki motorcycles we are using for our training courses.
We look forward to welcoming new visitors, and returning friends, for Off-road Motorcycle training, or holidays here in the South Hams.
Hare & Hounds 3 November 2007 @ Capton FarmRabbit returns!
On sunny Saturday 3rd November, South Hams MX Club together with Wheeldon Farm hosted their 4th event of the year at Capton Farm, Moreleigh.
With a very enthusiastic turnout on this popular 5 mile circuit, Rob “Rabbit” Wreyford showed his class to take the Expert win (16 laps). He was very closely matched for the first hour of the race by Charlie Richards and Rob Pollard who rode smoothly and had Rob Wreyford in their sights for 5-6 laps until Rob managed to pull away, showing his speed on the mini-bike section. Rob Pollard’s undoing was a mistake in the pits and he did extremely well to pass the other experts on the same laps, to finish third. Those other experts on the same laps as Charlie and Rob Pollard, in order of finishing, were Matt Clayden, Richie Churchill, Andy Muller and Sam Guppy. Clubman class was, at times, on pace with the experts with Richard Grills coming in first on 14 laps, closely followed by Paul Carpenter (also 14) and George Barden on 13 laps. Sportsman Limited was won by local man Martin Williams (13), with Douglas Wynne close behind also on 13 and Nigel Perring, third on 11 laps. Sportsman Open was won by Glynn Elliott on 13 laps (better than the last race, when he blew his bike up!), just behind him was Steve Rocket also on 13, and Wayne Clarke on 12 in third place. Over 40s showed their experience well, with Simon Sheridan taking it on a fantastic 14 laps, Paul Vowden second on 13, and Phil Sewell third on 12 laps.
Junior event was also popular, with the overall winner being Robbie Cross (14-16 yrs). Jnr 10-12 yrs winner was Tom Ingram on 8 laps, closely followed by Callum Coffin also on 8, with Connor Hill 3rd with 5 laps. Jnr 12-14 yrs winner was Olly Savery on 9 laps, closely followed by Daniel Richards also on 9 laps, and 3rd place went to Jay Cross with 7 laps, Jnrs 14-16 yrs was won by Robbie Cross on 10 laps (early part of the race was a great tussle with Tom Chapman, who unfortunately blew his bike on lap 5), followed by Josh Coker on 8 and Lawrence Saunders, also on 8 laps. Fastest lap time for Juniors was Tom Chapman with a 9 minute 9 second lap!
Club Nights starting again - November - MarchThis is probably Off-road Motorcycling’s best kept secret! Wheeldon is an Off-road Training Centre in Devon with all amenities available: trail riding tours, outdoor beginner’s circuit, MX track, 2 x Hare & Hounds circuits all within a 2km radius of the farm. But, best of all is the complex Hub: a full set of converted barns incorporating 450m Main indoor MX track, additional Junior indoor starter track, changing/shower facilities, catering kitchen, indoor heated swimming pool, along with luxury holiday cottage self-catering accommodation which doubles as B&B. Wheeldon Farm offers a great variety of opportunities to try Off-road motorcycling. Everything is based on-site, planning dictates that all riders must ride our motorcycles (currently a fleet of Suzuki's). We cater for everybody from complete beginner with no riding experience to GP stars e.g. Tyla Rattray, Carl Nunn, Stephen Sword. They’ve all ridden here and Carl kindly opened the Junior starter track which has been a great success as it ties in with the holiday self-catering accommodation. For Corporate events, which generally take place mid-week and out of main holiday season, Wheeldon can tailor our facilities to your particular needs. We’ve recently enjoyed fabulous events in the company of, for example, Michelin, Volvo, KBC, Redbull. All different in their requirements, and all hugely successful. We also run Track days (where you can bring your own bike to a local MX circuit), Hare & Hounds in conjunction with a local MX club. We can hire bikes out for any events if customers want to progress to one of these events before committing to buy their own. Wheeldon is run as a Training Centre under ACU coaching regs – so why not plan a winter excursion for your club? Ride for an evening (where else can you do this mid-winter?), meal on- or off-site afterwards and stay B&B returning home the following morning? Better still, what about your Christmas Staff party? For example, Club evenings (at £60 per rider), which we’ve been running for two years already for local clubs, run along the following lines: arrive with kit (5pm ish), paperwork sorted over cups of tea and general banter, change and safety briefing/introduction to bikes, split into groups and a guided siting session follows. Thereafter, each group takes turns riding on the circuit for another three sessions (equivalent to riding 3 races at an MX meeting), with Coaches marshalling/monitoring progress, and on hand between sessions to offer advice/suggestions to improve technique. At the end of the riding, all riders are more than happy to move onto showers/changing and food and refreshments (whilst still sweating from their efforts on the circuit!) For these Club evenings, the group size needs to be 9 (minimum – any less and the choice is to go home or pay the difference) up to 16 (maximum). The Group must pre-book and pay a Group deposit of £120 to secure the evening on the calendar. All riders must produce a valid competition licence and bring their own kit. Kit is available to hire at an additional cost. Wheeldon reserve the right to exclude inexperienced riders if they are considered a potential risk to other riders. Full events are also available (see website) for novices to Off-road if they don’t fulfill the criteria to attend a Club session. We run one day Off Road Experience for complete beginners, or those wanting some dedicated training time, and weekend Off Road Academy events which include trail riding for those with road bike licences.
Off Road Experience - Stag "do"16 of them got off the train at Totnes, all from London, had a night out locally, and then we collected them in the morning with the Wheeldon Fun Bus and brought them out here for a day on our motorcycles. The Stag, we were pleased to see, was suitably dressed for riding (he knows what we mean!) Quite a few "never ridden before" and a few with scooters (not quite the same guys......). Where do you start with that lot? At the beginning I suppose..... Well, safe to say I think they all had a fantastic time, learnt a lot of new skills, had the best BBQ ever with local meats, and then we dropped them in Torquay for a night out (Was Torquay ready for them? Were they ready for Torquay?) Who knows... Redbull Empire of Dirt - Riders chill out at WheeldonRedbull decked out the courtyard, supplied the Redbull, bussed the riders in (ending with a trailer ride down to the farm) for some quality chill out time at Wheeldon. In between practice sessions in the Newton Abbot area, over a couple of days, some of the top BMX riders in the World congregated at Wheeldon to try a few stunts, tinker with their bikes, enjoy spectacular bbq food and generally relax before the competition. 14th April 2007 - Hare & Hounds, Capton Farm, Nr MoreleighFirst time we've co-run something like this. Along with South Hams MX Club, we ran a Hare & Hounds on a new circuit, designed by with Nick Life no less, and the response was Fantastic! We had a group of Icelanders here who were mad keen to try something different (don't have this kind of terrain where they come from) and had an absolute ball! All want to come back and do it again. We had lots of riders from all over the South West, and feedback so far has been that they loved the course! Great to have somewhere different to ride, and all keen to come back again for the next one. 9th June is the next one. Different course again, Nick Life getting involved in the design again, and look forward to seeing you all there! Any comments at all, just email us through the website, and we'll be happy to get back to you. Easter Holidays 2007Lots more Junior training run over the Easter holidays - seems the Juniors are raring to go, and keen to get some practice in....... And more beginners wanting to take up a new hobby (watch out Mum & Dad - at least you know where we are) 30-31st March 2007Different format again. Half day Friday (allocated all kit, motorcycles, checked out riding ability on outdoor track - glorious sunshine!) followed by full day Trail riding on Saturday.
